A cold day at the December 2014 unreserved auction in Saskatoon SK, Canada

The temperature was a chilly -19°C (-2°F) when the auction started, but that didn’t stop a huge crowd of buyers from flocking to our December 2014 unreserved auction in Saskatoon SK, Canada. By the end of the day, CA$41+ million (US$36+ million) of farm equipment, trucks, trailers, construction equipment and more had been sold, making this Ritchie Bros.’ largest farm equipment auction of 2014.

Snow outside, a warm crowd inside

“It was the best inventory we’ve had in Saskatoon all year, and we saw interested bidders from around the world competitively bidding on the equipment,” said Jordan Clarke, Regional Sales Manager. “We had a huge crowd on site and a lot of participation online too, with strong prices across the board.”

More than 4,550 people from 32 countries registered to bid in the auction, including more than 1,600 people who attended the auction in person—and no doubt appreciated the comfort of the heated auction theater. Equipment sold to buyers from across Canada, into the USA and even as far away as Australia.

Online bidding breaks records

@truenorthfree shared a photo of our online bidding system on Twitter with this comment: “Technology is great, this is a much better way to do an auction when -30C outside! @RitchieBros.”

The auction set two online bidding records at our Saskatoon site: most online bidders ever (almost 2,900) and most equipment sold to online bidders (CA$20+ million or US$18+ million).

Surplus dealer inventory

Ritchie Bros. sold equipment for more than 150 equipment owners at this auction, including 120+ items from JayDee AgTech, a John Deere farm equipment dealer with nine locations in Saskatchewan.

“This is my third December auction with Ritchie Bros. and I couldn’t be happier,” said Travis Moberg, Re-Marketing Manager for JayDee AgTech. “We received a lot more calls this time from interested buyers in the Midwest US, Manitoba, and even the Eastern seaboard and quite a bit of the equipment has been sold outside the area. Selling with Ritchie Bros. is a great way for us to market the units, get them sold and not keep our cash tied up in equipment we no longer need.”
