Cranes selling at the Casper, WY auction

With close to 40 cranes silhouetted against the Wyoming sky, row after row of heavy-spec trucks, trailers and other equipment lined up in neatly in the yard, and more than 3,000 eager on-site and online bidders at the ready, the stage was set for the largest single-owner auction in Ritchie Bros. history – Casper, Wyoming on March 25, 2015.

By the end of the auction, 2,290+ items were sold to new owners in this complete dispersal for Energy Transportation, one of the most prestigious crane operations in North America.

The highest priced item on auction day: a 2010 Liebherr LTM1500-8.1 600-ton 16x8x12 all terrain crane that sold for US$3.35 million—the most expensive all terrain crane sold by Ritchie Bros. to date. (See more selling prices with a free account.)

And if anyone hoped Mother Nature would add to the excitement of the day, she didn't disappoint with a pre-auction display of snow blowing sideways, dramatic clouds, and brilliant sunshine – all at the same time!

Thousands of bidders, and record-breaking results

But a little bit of unpredictable weather didn't faze the well-prepared Ritchie Bros. team, who welcomed a crowd of 1,000+ people at the auction site and had everything in place at the customer's location for online bidding.

Even a network TV news crew showed up, and Dave Ritchie – one of Ritchie Bros.' co-founders – flew in just for the event.

But the weather held, and bidders from 47 countries competed on site and online for the huge selection of cranes and other equipment. By day's end, we'd sold more than US$54 million of equipment – with no minimum bids or reserve prices – including US$35 million of cranes.

Satisfied customers

With the selection of well-maintained items all sold to the highest bidder on auction day, buyers got equipment they could put to work right away. And the seller and founder of Energy Transportation, Dan McGlade, got the best returns possible and sold everything in one day.

"Bidder turnout was even bigger than we expected, which resulted in strong equipment values in the auction," said Dan. "Ritchie Bros. is the only company that could have put this sale together. Their marketing efforts alone were outstanding. They did everything possible to make sure people were aware of the auction and the results today are evident."
